Holiday Musings, 2013

Hi  ! ! Renxkyoko Iglesias here again ! ! !

I’ve been busy  ( as usual ). Next week is exam week, my finals, and also the last week of  my school semester.

So, okay, I know I’m late for the party, Thanksgiving party, that’s what, but I ‘ve had this post written just after Thanksgiving, and kept on my folder, and I know it’s now stale and lame,  but  I’m  posting it, just the same.  Well,  mainly  pictures, anyway,  so  I hope you don’t get too bored.

To start off…….  look closely at the pic below. There’s a baby turkey  up there . It was taken about 3 months ago at our frontyard. Can you see it? It’s a little above center.

DSCN2303

Well, here they are again, just a few days before Thanksgiving Day.  My, how they’ve grown.

DSCN2332

On Thanksgiving day…… RIP Turkey

T3 (4)

We didn’t have guests on Thanksgiving Day. Just family, all  6 of us,  so we didn’t cook much. In fact, the roast turkey pic was last year’s. We had decided not to have turkey this year. We had ham , though. I cooked my specialty, Paella, pic below.

DSCN2356

I also cooked  vegetable wrapped in eggroll wrapper, with brown sauce.   Sooo delicious.

DSCN2357.Below are barbecued ribs and roast pork with liver sauce. ( liver sauce in the bottle )

DSCN2358

Shown below is Kare-kare,  baby back ribs , stewed in peanut sauce. Peanut sauce ?  It’s actually very delicious.   Well, I guess it’s an acquired taste.  But, believe me, it’s good.

DSCN2364

Below  is cassava cake.

DSCN2359

DSCN2362

There’s also turrones  ( banana wrapped in lumpia wrapper )  The banana  Filipinos use is not the common banana, nor plantain. We use  Saba.  Below is a pic of saba.

.Chicken macaroni salad and fruit salad.

DSCN2365

.Above is almond jelly and lychees.

That’s it. Our Thanksgiving spread. Oh, there’s pumpkin pie too.  Our dishes were purely Philippine, though.  No turkey, no mashed potato, no green bean casserole.

After dinner, I went to work for this  Black Friday madness.. 10 PM  on Thanksgiving Day up to 7 AM Friday.  There was already a long line of shoppers  at the store when I arrived.   Crazy. I guess I was just as crazy. I shopped  after work. I  had been  eyeing a few items at our store but couldn’t buy them. There were only 6 of each item so  I was happy there was one left for me.  It’s a $400 coat  but because employees get 75 % discount….. *wink *

DSCN2373

.DSCN2370

.Then I went to the next door store to purchase this nice Bebe sweater, then off  I went to Nine West to buy this pair of leather boots.’

DSCN2368

DSCN2367

.I also bought  a few toastie scarves. I came home  exhausted, sleepy, but  a  happy , contented cow.

Then, on Dec. 6, my parents and I went to see  the Fab Four concert.  This  is a Beatles look-alike, sound -alike band.   Oh. my. gosh,  they do look and sound like the Beatles.  My Mom sparkled !  And sang. And clapped  * Hold me, clap, clap, love me, clap, clap…. lol * and swayed . Mom?  . LOL !

DSCN2381

.DSCN2374

.I wonder, how and where did  they find a guy who looks and sounds exactly like Paul McCartney ( or John Lennon), plays the piano, harmonica, drums, bass guitar, and LEFT HANDED, to boot. ! ! !

My Mom did  watch a real Beatles concert when she was in  Grade 6. She also knows and can sing all the Beatles songs ( we have an Anthology,  a complete collection of Beatles songs), and in high school , was  obssesed with Paul McCartney. She had a shrine of Paul McCartney in her room.   Maybe  with candles, too ? Now , that’s creepy.

Three  years ago, I watched an Eric Clapton concert with my parents.  Great guitar playing ! !  I love classic rock !

This is all for now.  Happy Holidays, folks ! Be good, be nice, and Peace to all !

    • I know, right? Our Russian neighbors also have roast turkey ( I think the live turkeys are theirs, LOL ) but the rest of their foods are Russian. I’m sure of that because one of the daughters is my classmate/bestfriend. It’ s really intresting to know different cultures.

      Cheers, jenn !

  5. The food looks incredible Renx! yum! I chuckled at the R.I.P Turkey after you took a picture of it lol

    • ha ha ! We sure know the fate of those turkeys. Ooops, I’m not supposed to laugh.

*whisper* We ate the the same food, leftovers, you know, for 4 days. o_O

      Reply

      • Gah!! 4 days! so, turkey sandwich..turkey soup..turkey meatballs..turkey lasagna..turkey salad..turkey noodles..turkey empanadas..um dang lol

        Reply

        • Oh, no, we didn’t have turkey this year. Do you know last year’s turkey leftover stayed in the freezer for 6 months before we threw it away. We ‘d forgotten it was there ! ! What we had for 4 days was ham… ham sandwich, chopped ham in fried rice, etc. Better than turkey, coz to be honest, noone in the family really likes turkey. So , yeah, we opted out. We had Kare-kare for 3 days, bbq pork and roast pork for 3 days too. And the salads , esp. the macaroni salad !!! ( there’s still some left in the freezer )

          • 6 months!! dang, hey I <3 <3 kare-kare and lechon, I could eat those all year long :D who made so much macaroni salad though? I can't think of many ways to add that to dishes :O you could send some over this way if it keeps ;)

            Reply

            • Oh, wow ! You know that roast pork is LECHON?

I made the macaroni salad, he he he. I know, it was too much for 6 people. The fact is, we actually restrained ourselves from cooking too much. My Mom is used to cooking for a batallion. that used to be her business. She had a catering business, ha ha ha.

            • Absolutely! I love lechon and especially palabok, We even have a max’s chicken here that roasts their chicken to perfection. Their lumpias are a little too soft for my liking though :)

Dang! I would of eaten enough for a battalion, soon after followed by a damn good workout that is lol! I can’t wait to see your Christmas party photos ;)

    • Noeleen, look at the center, then just a bit above the center, and a little to the left, you can see the turkey. lol

And I cooked most of the food, Noeleen. Up to the wee hours of the morning.

Oh boy! All that food looked so yummy! I would have had to been rolled out the door! ;) wow you got some nice clothes! I didn’t get to do any shopping for Black Friday! I was working, and our town sucks for shopping!
Our walmart is doing renos during Christmas, like seriously!
But I’m glad you had a wonderful thanksgiving!
    Hugs!

    Reply

    • Rebecca, we ate the leftover for 4 days. Hu hu hu…….. It’s not good to throw away food.

ha ! How could I not shop? I was right there already, right smack in the middle of madness.

      Reply

      • You had that much food! @_@ I am so jealous! My eyes are glazed over at the mere thought! I am not a Turkey person, so hello! Yummy!
        I love left overs(depends tho.)
We Canadians don’t have black Friday, but we love the sales. It sucks because we can’t use black Friday as an excuse for a day off to go shopping!
That’s what boxing day is for hee hee. We are weird!

  12. hello, Ren… ang ganda ng first pic. can i have some of the baby back ribs and cassava cake? the cassava cake looks good. and yes, some lychees and jelly, hehe. the fruit salad looks delicious, too but kinda rich (there’s peaches toppings), after eating a proper meal, i usually find out that there’s little space left for fruit salad and cake, huhu. ;) btw, it’s nice that you have lumpiang sariwa, too Pinoy, and it usually neutralizes the taste of meats, ‘no?

the sweater looks maganda and the boots, too. pwedeng pabili rin ng coat at 75% discount? hehe. Merry Christmas, dear. :)

    • Ano yung first pic? Yung may baby turkey?

Hay, naku, we’re still eating the cassave cake ! ! And naubos kagad , yung bbq pork. Yummy talaga. Meron kaming delicious recipe of the marinade; Even my sis’ BF, who’s non-Filipino ( he’s white ) loves this bbq pork. He is our taste – taster. Pinaka. gusto nya, yung fresh lumpia. He loves the sauce.

Alam mo, medio secret yung 75% discount. Ha ha.

      Reply

      • yeah, yong may puno. you’re being artistic without knowing it, hehe.

masarap cassava cake for me, simple ang lasa… that so, marunong kang mag-marinate ng pork for the bbq? ang dami mo namang alam gawin, kakainis ka na kapatid, hihi. at may taste-taster talaga. he should marry your sister so he’d eat well, kamo,.. Pinays always make it their mission to fatten up their hubbies, haha. yup, masarap sauce ng lumpia, medyo matamis ta’s may ground nuts, yumyum.

ah, basta, gusto ko yong sweater. :) hwag na coat, di masyadong maginaw dito ngayon. yon lang, wala kang 75% discount sa next door store? dangit. ;)

Happy Yuletide. have fun this holidays, dear… :)

  16. Mate! Seriously… is there NO end to your epicness? The spread is jaw-dropping! I want some! I’m on a diet and that stuff just aint helping, Ren! :P lol I want some of the Paella!!! I’m not fond of Turkey myself, we have Chicken for Christmas these days and have done for about 5 or 6 years!

Oh, three cheers for Ren! Hip Hip Horaaaaaay! X 3 (<– I'm too lazy to write it 3 times!) because she's finishing Uni! :D I'm assuming you still have a few more terms to do though before you get your full degree?

I found the baby Turkey! Granted I HAD to enlarge the picture, but I found it. Um, just a question, why is there Turkeys walking around your street? If that was my area they would've been nicked by now or the local Dogs and Foxes would've got them! I'm assuming they belong to someone, or are they wild?

Your 'black friday' sales are mental! I've seen them on the TV, In the UK we have nothing like that! I mean we have the post xmas day sales and January sales, but they're nothing like that! Good for you playing it safe and smart by being on the inside! :D

If I don't see you before it, have a wonderful Christmas and a excellent New Year, Ren, and all the best to you and your family! :O)

    • Phil, guess what, we actually restrained ourselves from cooking too much. Compared to past Thanksgiving spreads, this one is quite modest. I’ll give you a link of a post I made with over the top spread. But then, it was sort of reunion. We had guests . Ah, I do make good paella. Toot, toot !

I’m 90% sure those turkeys were/are owned by our Russian neighbors. They home kill their meats LOL ! ! Sometimes, their turkeys hang around at our backyard. It’s fine, though. Loving the scene ! Kinda pastoral.

I know ! Mental! Crazy ! Mad ! Americans are crazily in love with good deals !

  17. P.S: Oh, my Mam’s a fan of the Beatles, but me… not so much, I only like a few of their songs. But your Mam sounds slightly more mental than mine, only slightly! lol :)

    • I have a feeling Thanksgiving Day is a much bigger holiday than Christmas here in the US. Well, I’m not sure, but then, every family celebrates it, whatever their religion, beliefs, etc are. Christmas is only for Christians, so yeah.
